How to Overcome Your Fear of Starting a Business

Being afraid is a normal part of being human. We’re complex beings with complex feelings and that’s okay! What’s not okay is how fear can absolutely hold you back from taking action. Like starting that creative business you’ve been dreaming of or even taking the next step!

This week, we’re digging into how you can overcome the fear of starting or growing your creative business. Because as much as fear is totally normal, wouldn’t it be nice to take control of it?

Let’s dive in!

Fear is a powerful emotion. It’s there to really protect you from harm but we’re not being chased by tigers or other animal predators anymore. Instead, the modern brain is protecting us from modern issues.

Embarrassment. Isolation. Spending too much at Michaels… No, wait. No one’s afraid of that!

However, that need to protect, that fear, can lead us to being stuck in one place. It’s the reason we procrastinate, the reason we ignore our dreams and the reason we struggle to actually take action. Luckily, fear is a dragon we can tame.

Notice I said tame. You don’t have to SLAY your fears. Experiencing fear is part of being a human. But you can learn to tame them and make them manageable so you can overcome them. So let’s get cracking on doing just that!

Determine What You’re Really Afraid of.

Many times we don’t even register that the emotion we’re feeling is fear. We just know that we’re uncomfortable. We know that we’re stuck in one place. We procrastinate. Make excuses. Anything but take action.

But this is how fear presents itself. And in order to overcome it, we must identify it. Call it by name. Ask yourself, why am I holding back. What am I worried about.

While there are many reasons people are afraid to start or move on in their business, I find that it’s typically narrowed down to 3 main areas.

  • Fear of the Unknown- You don’t really know what to expect or what this world will look like. And that can be so scary! After all, you’re cozy where you are.
  • Fear of Money- This is a two parter. You’re afraid of spending money, because hello… what if you LOSE IT. Or you’re afraid of making money. Because hello… WHAT IF YOU LOSE IT. It can be complicated.
  • Fear of Failure- And we’ve hit the most common one. People feel like fear is the be all, end all. But, ahem. It’s not. Failure is simply one way that didn’t work. So really, it’s a lesson!

Challenge That Fear.

Once you know what you’re actually scared of, it’s time to challenge it. I like to play a game of “worst case scenario.” This fun little game is where I take an action and carry it through to the worst case scenario.

For example, if I start a business, it might fail. And that means that I'll have wasted my time. And that means that people will know. And that means they'll say mean things about me. They'll know I'M a failure. I'll be embarrassed. No one will respect me...

And so on and so forth.

Once you’ve done this, you can look at that worst case scenario and ponder over the validity here. I like to ask myself two questions.

  1. Is this likely to happen?
  2. Is this line of thinking even true?

Are you likely to experience 100% failure in everything. No. Statistically speaking, that’s not likely.

Will the people you know lose respect for you? Nope. So not true!

This exercise helps shed some light on how silly our fears can be!

Determine Your Why.

Want to know what’s more powerful than fear? Your why. That thing that motivated you to think about this big scary dream in the first place! Get clear on what you’re working towards because it will be the thing that gets you through some of the challenging times.

And let me be clear. There will be times that are challenging. And that’s okay! Business ownership is an amazing thing but seriously… no one loves doing taxes! Except tax professionals, maybe.

Now I could stop right here and that would be enough to get you started but I have two other tools to help you!

Don’t Be Afraid to Babystep.

People get all sorts of anxious when they look at everything that needs to be done to run a business. You don’t have to do that. Instead, you can baby step it! Take action on ONE small thing.

Progress is progress and it doesn’t matter how small those actions are!

Find Your Tribe.

There are few things as powerful as a community. Find a group of like minded individuals to help you with support and encouragement. Luckily, there are about a million FREE Facebook groups available for business owners, regardless of industry. Search there and you’re sure to find something you love!

Fear is powerful. But friend, you’re even stronger. It’s time to take control and step into your dream. Are you ready?
