What You REALLY Need to Start a Creative Business

If starting or building a creative business is on your list of goals for 2020, you’re probably already doing some research as to what you need in order to make it happen. And chances are that you’re getting a little overwhelmed with the process! After all, there are a million people telling you what you HAVE to have and it feels like a lot.

It’s also not 100% true. Sure, in order to start a business you’ll need things like a place to host what you’re selling. But you already knew that! The truth is that you really only need three things to get started or start growing. And this week, we’re digging into that!

Now before we dive, I want to clarify something. This isn’t the exhaustive list of things that will make business easier. This is what you need to start and grow a successful business, regardless of what industry you’re in. We’re not talking about tools. We’re not talking about coaches. We’re not even talking about technology.

The reason is that every business has different needs when it comes to those specific areas. However, we all need the same things to really be successful and without these things, we can find ourselves struggling.

You Need a: Strong Foundation.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard people say that they want to start a business and within hours, they’ve announced it. Something about business ownership has become very trendy and people start it from a whimsical, impulsive place.

Unfortunately, the most successful businesses weren’t built upon sand. Oh no. They were built on a solid foundation. In order to build that foundation, you need to know a few things.

#1. What is your goal?

What is the goal for your business? Why are you starting it? Pro Tip: if the answer here is money, you’re wrong. There’s nothing wrong with money but let’s be honest… there are easier ways to make it and money doesn’t necessarily equal success. Money won’t make the challenges any easier.

Instead, determine why you want to start your business and where you want it to lead you.

#2. Who is your audience?

Business isn’t business without an audience. So who are you serving? Who is your audience? If you’re struggling with this question, that’s okay! Now’s a perfect time to figure out who your audience is.

These are the people that you dream of working with. And remember, you don’t want to serve everyone. You want to serve people that will value what you have to offer.

#3. How will you help them?

You know what you want and you know who you want to work with. But how do you plan on taking your goals for your business and meeting your audience with them? How can you help your audience? What particular need will you meet?

This is a good time to complete this sentence.

“My name is _______ and I started my business because I _________. I want to help ________________ by _________________.”

You Need a: Solid Plan.

That foundation is great and all but it won’t amount to much without a plan! So take what you know and create a plan for your success. The things you need to know are…

  • What are you going to offer?
    • This is your free offerings as well as paid. What types of things will you be putting out into the world? For an example, I share blog posts and videos and offering coaching as well as courses!
  • How will you make money?
    • Sure, money isn’t the be all, end all but you absolutely do need it to survive. So how do you plan on making it? Map out your offerings and price them as well!
  • How will you market your business?
    • Rumor has it you need to be everywhere! This is wrong. You need to figure out what platforms you’ll use to talk about your business. What are some ways you can spread the news about your business!

Creating a plan helps you start with less stress and more impact! But it’s not the only thing you need.

You Need a: Positive Mindset.

Come on. You knew I was getting to this point. You need a solid mindset to make things happen. This means you need to believe in your ability to do the hard work. You need to know that you have something of value to offer. It means being willing to take chances and being willing to fail because failure is part of the game!

That positive mindset will be fed by loving yourself and taking care of yourself. Self care is so important to your mindset and it’s something you need to implement right away.
