If you’re running a business online, you know the importance of having an email list. But figuring out how to get people on that list can feel so overwhelming! How are you supposed to even get your first email subscribers to actually USE email marketing?
This week, we’re digging into how you can get your first 1000 email list subscribers, even if you’re starting from scratch. And trust me, these three steps are going to make a world of difference in your perspective!
You’re probably wondering why you even need to bother with an email list. And I understand, you’re already creating content. Why do you need to make more?
The unfortunate truth is that while there are so many amazing platforms to market on, our email lists are truly the only ones that we really own. Chances are you’ve been around for a day when Instagram or Facebook has gone down. What if that happens in the middle of a launch and the only way you have to reach your people is through social media?
Well, you’re in trouble!
This is why your email list is important. You’re able to connect with your audience in a more personal way and you know you’re going to reach them no matter what.
So let’s dig into how we can get that list started.
Step One: Collect Your Emails Legally.
One of the first hurdles to email collection is getting emails the legal way. In the beginning, you may think that you can just grab emails from orders or from people that have emailed you and throw them in a spreadsheet and just email them.
Nope! This is actually illegal. People have to opt in to a list, or sign up on their own, really. If you add someone to a list without their consent, you’re in violation of the CAN-SPAM laws. And you DO NOT want to be on the wrong side of that law.
Not to mention, emailing from your personal email address with emails on a spreadsheet is just unpleasant.
Instead, you’ll want to find an email marketing platform. This type of service will allow you to create opt in forms that you can place on your website, link to your social media and more. Not to mention you’ll be able to write your emails and send them to everyone on your list without having to manually copy and paste it.
Now there are a million different ways to use your email marketing platform to really boost your business but for the sake of this lesson, we’re going to stop there. You simply want to create a form that will allow people to opt in.
The two services I recommend are MailChimp and ConvertKit. Now Mailchimp is free up to 1000 subscribers but it does have it’s limitations. If you’re looking for a way to start quickly and with no money, Mailchimp CAN work.
However, I whole heartedly recommend ConvertKit. This platform is organized in a user friendly way, allows you to automate and segment your list and really grows with your business.
Step #2: Create a Killer Opt In.
Here’s the thing. Most people aren’t going to sign up for an email list just for the sake of signing up. Instead, you have to give them something in return. This is where your opt in comes in.
An opt in is going to be a something of value that will solve one of you client problems for FREE in exchange for their email address.
The key to making this work is giving your audience something they really want. Don’t be afraid to give away free value, either. Not only will this get people on your email list but it helps build your authority.

Step #3: Market That Opt In Like a Paid Product.
This is where people can struggle and it’s honestly the part that will make or break your opt in. You have to market that opt in like you’re making money off of it. Because truthfully, it will make you money!
Create a landing page your freebies. Share the benefits of the freebie and have a sign up form on that page. You want people to see how the opt in will help them and make it easy for them to sign up.
If you have testimonials around your opt in, share those! Let people see that it’s already helped other people!
Share on social media, Pin it on Pinterest, add it to Facebook groups. Wherever you can share your content, share your opt in.
These are the three steps you need to take to help you get your first 1000 subscribers. And you can keep growing over time. Try new freebies, new methods of marketing those freebies and then stay connected to your email list by emailing them regularly.
Pro Tip: Email them once a week so they know to expect to hear from you and don’t always make it about selling. Just share value.
That’s what it’s all about!
