How to Make Facebook Live Work for You

Facebook Live.

It’s what everyone is buzzing about these days. As you may or may not know, I was a HUGE fan of Periscope, going so far as to say that I thought Periscope was a small business game changer. But friends, I think Facebook Live totally has Periscope beat.

So let’s talk about it a bit, shall we?

Last August, Facebook opened up the Facebook Live feature for verified accounts… you know, the celebrities and public figures. And all of us live streamers on Periscope desperately wanted to get verified because, hello… Live streaming on Facebook sounds so awesome! Thankfully the higher ups at Facebook heard our desperate pleas and it was made available to nearly everyone that is on Facebook.

Which means  that pretty much anyone can Live Broadcast on their personal profiles, business pages and groups. {We won’t discuss my opinion on live streaming in a group that isn’t your own though… #dontdoit}

This also means that all the bloggers and the business owners should be throwing confetti and celebrating since Live streaming on Facebook means big things for engagement.

And with all the visibility issues that businesses face on Facebook, it’s nice to know that there are some ways to make sure you’re still being seen in the feed.

According to Facebook, there were changes made that allowed Live Videos appear higher in a users newsfeed. They also appear in more feeds because Live videos are generally more interesting to viewers than a prerecorded video. So let’s do the math. Higher in the newsfeed with more people watching. What does that mean? You have the potential to really blow up your organic reach. And that’s a big deal. Because organic reach is free and awesome.

Even better? When you’re done with your broadcast, it stays on your Facebook page forever! Or until you delete it. Which means you can share that bugger again and again. And we all know how much Facebook LOVES videos!

So how do you make Facebook Live work for you?

Familiarize yourself with the feature.

You’re going to need the Pages app on your mobile device, in case you didn’t know. From there, you’ll find the Live feature within the post publisher. That little halo-d dude? Click him.

Once you click the dude, this is the screen you’re going to get. Add your video title and click go live. From there, you’ll be able to switch back and forth between your rear and forward facing cameras, you’ll see comments from viewers and generally will have an awesome time.

Let’s make it even more awesome! And by more awesome, I mean let’s make it totally work for your business!

Know what you’re going to talk about.

Okay, it may seem like a good idea to Facebook Live on the fly and it totally can be. But my advice to you is to always go into it with a plan. Don’t get me wrong, you definitely don’t need a script or anything but a few talking points written down are a great way to make sure you stay on track with your broadcast!

Planning out your broadcast also makes content scheduling easier… because I say reuse anything you can. Do a short broadcast on a topic? Awesome. Expand upon that in a blog post. And embed that video into your blog. Or vice versa! If you’ve written up an awesome blog post, don’t be afraid to do a video on that post!

Use an awesome title.

While your video will be live in peoples feeds, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll stop scrolling. In order to grab their attention, take some time to come up with a compelling title. You want it to be a good description of what your video is about but you also want it to be kind of short and sweet. AKA, don’t give it all up in the title.

On that note, I think it’s important for me to tell you to avoid using any “click bait” style titles. Facebook is working to eliminate that type of marketing from the feed so you’ll want to make sure that whatever you title your broadcast is a real and authentic title. No “The secret to my first million” if you haven’t already hit that and are actually sharing the secret, mkay?

Engage, engage, engage.

I cannot stress this enough. Now you know this goes for any platform really, but engagement is the best way to build a dedicated and loyal following. People want to feel like they’re connecting with one another so when you’re live broadcasting, make sure you respond to people that are commenting.

If you’re doing an informational type broadcast, you can always say that you’ll answer questions at the end. However, I find that engaging with your audience as you’re able to is the best practice. Want an excellent example of a business that practices this style of engagement? Head over to How Does She’s Facebook Page.

Ask Facebook Live viewers to share!

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure about this practice but after seeing it done, I think it can work. When you’re just starting your broadcast, don’t be afraid to ask people to share your broadcast on their timeline if they have friends/connections that would also enjoy it! I know I’ve seen some amazing broadcasts I would have normally missed had they not been shared!

Leave with a call to action.

This is a big one.

When you’re ending your broadcast, be sure to include a call to action. AKA, a request for your viewers to do something. Now what this something is is completely up to you. For me, I’d ask them to give my page a like for more updates. Or maybe include a link to your newsletter sign up and let them know how awesome your newsletter is. Whatever you do, make sure it’s something of value to you!

Have fun!

And finally, have fun. Because none of this is worth it if you’re not having fun with it!

Okay, guys, that’s all for now! If you’re posting Live on Facebook, leave me a comment and let me know where to find you! I’d love to watch!

Until next time, Happy Wednesday!

I found the course offered by Erin was profoundly inspirational and practical. I wasn't overwhelmed by the amount of content and nearly all the content was directly essential to my business. Erin offered a course that paces itself enough to allow for questions and implementation. I find myself referring back to the course content as a resource. The Facebook group also served as a great place to find feedback, support, and camaraderie.
